Recd. 1355

Addressed C. in C. China, repeated Admiralty, Embassy, Tokyo.

810.

British Steamship ASIAN recently siezed by

Japanese and taken to Pescadores has been released and

now returned to Hong Kong.

Master has complained to me of theft by Japanese

of money belonging to ship's Officers and of certain ship's

stores, and that his personal property including letters

was searched.

Master further states interrogation which

lasted for eight days was unnecessarily prolonged. Food

supplies of officers and men was also restricted. Master

considers attitude of Japanese Officers was reasonably

courteous but that of the men was discourteous.

Written report will be forwarded as soon as

received from owners.
